Daughters of Cambodia, Phnom Penh

Just wanted to share with you a fantastic organization we visited while in Phnom Penh.  Daughters of Cambodia (as well as Sons of Cambodia) is an organization that helps victims of sex-trafficking and sex-exploitation in Cambodia. http://daughtersofcambodia.org/

They work to create freedom through social enterprise. People learn skills and gain employment to improve their lives. They learn skills such as sewing, cooking, wood-working, pedicures, retail, etc. We ate in their cafe, had a manicure, and did a little shopping in their store. They also have a boutique hotel!

Tamarind Flakes in Bagan

After a meal in Bagan you are often offered a little sweet, Tamarind Flakes. A little sweet but a little bit sour and oh so addicting! Never seen these before so my understanding is they are only found in Myanmar...or maybe just in Bagan?! Why do I fall in love with things that you can only find in one place?

Angkor Archaeological Park, Siem Reap, Cambodia

The reason for going to Siem Reap is to explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Angkor Archaeological Park. The entire park comprises of approximately 200 different temples, and we visited the three most popular ones, first Angkor Wat, then Angkor Thom and finally Ta Prohm, aka "the one from the Tomb Raider movie starring Angelina Jolie". Each temple is very impressive and interesting for different reasons.

Most people get to the Park by tuk tuk, but we opted for a car and driver. This option is a little more money but you get the enjoyment of air conditioning as you drive between temples and you do not have to breathe in the dust from the dirt roads. We arrived early in the morning (and I mean early) to watch the sunrise over the Angkor Wat (a lot of people do this or try to watch the sunset). Here is our day...

Quading thru Siem Reap, Cambodia

Not something we would normally do and because my cousin Megan is traveling with us at the moment, we knew it was something she would enjoy. So we decided to give it a try, and boy, we were so glad we did!  The Cambodian countryside is breathtaking. We went through villages and vast open spaces. It is the dry season right now, so the roads were very dusty, it looked like someone spread cocoa or cinnamon powder on everything (in the wet season, you are covered by mud)! It was a very bumpy ride, and I think Jason was trying to hit all the dips to see how high I would bounce! The two hour journey went by very fast and it was a lot of fun.

Besides the stunning scenery, a favourite part of the experience were seeing the happy children. They could hear us coming and would run up to the side of the road. Some would wave at you with such enthusiasm that it made your heart burst with happiness while others waved with hesitation but once you waved back to them their face lit up with joy!

A reception like that and the beauty of the landscape we saw is something that will not be forgotten.

Going to the Movies in Asia - "Co Dan Dai Chien", Da Nang, Vietnam

This one is too good not to write a quick blog about. We saw yet another movie in Vietnam but we enjoyed it so much that we saw it twice and need to share it with you! It is a sequel for a Vietnamese comedy starring a mostly female cast. "Co Dan Dai Chien" means something to the effect of Bridal Wars. The trailers looked very interesting and we had to see it. Only one theatre (Lotte Cinema) in Da Nang was showing it with English subtitles.

The movie is basically about men who are in relationships but cheat by having multiple girlfriends and a team of ladies (think Charlies Angels meets team Mission Impossible) who's service/mission is to expose these men using sophisticated and entertaining schemes. The script, acting and production quality is excellent.

The quirkiness and absurdity of the movie worked and it was most enjoyable, and hilarious.

Dragon Bridge, Da Nang, Vietnam

One of the most beautiful bridges we have seen. It crosses the Han River in Da Nang. It should be seen in both the day and night, and from all angles. It opened March 29, 2013 for traffic and was designed by a US-based company. It was built for a total of $88 million USD.

Every Saturday night at 9pm, it puts on a show not to be missed...
